MESSAGE FROM NUECES COUNTY JUVENILE JUSTICE PROGRAMS COORDINATOR
PAUL FLORES

THE GOAL OF MENTORING
The goal of mentoring programs is to provide youth with positive adult contact and, thereby, reduce
risk factors (e.g., early antisocial behavior, alienation, lack of commitment to school) by enhancing
protective factors (e.g., healthy beliefs, opportunities for involvement, and social and material reinforcement for appropriate behavior). Mentors provide youth with personal connectedness, su-
pervision and guidance, skills training, career or cultural enrichment opportunities, a knowledge
of spirituality and values and, perhaps most importantly, goals and hope for the future.

If you know anyone interested in becoming a volunteer please contact: Paul Flores 361-561-6130 or paul.flores@nuecescountytx.gov

NUECES COUNTY JUVENILE JUSTICE VOLUNTEERS: DEDICATION AND SERVICE WITH PROVEN IMPACT

Nancy T. Goodman has been a registered nurse for over 55 years. As a young public health nurse in the 1960’s in Detroit she developed her skills in advocating for the voiceless dealing with the inequalities of the health care system. In the 1970’s in Dayton, Ohio she worked with school nurses in vari-ous high schools to set up classes for pregnant teens and teen fathers. She was also a childbirth educator in a very large teen pregnancy clinic, her spe-cialty was Maternal Child and Women’s Health. She moved to Corpus Christi in 1992 as an administrator to open Bay Area Medical Center. She has spent the last 23 years of her career as faculty in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at TAMUCC. Besides her teaching responsibilities she was very involved with working with nursing students to help them be successful in a very rigorous program. She became involved with NCJJC in 2000. She was one of the first mentors and volunteers for Ring of Champi-ons, the first faith based program allowed to work in the juvenile system in the state. She has worked with youth in Detention and Robert Barnes for both organizations since that time.

A little about Joe... He has worked with at-risk youth for 35+ years. He spent most of that time as Juvenile Probation Officer with this Depart-ment. In 2007, Joe Alley retired as the First Assistant Chief Juvenile Probation Officer. Joe recently became a volunteer with the depart-ment, specifically mentoring a youth with the One Heart Project (OHP). Mentors with the OHP commit to mentoring at-risk youth for 1 year. He has motivated this mentee to take his GED placement test, has assisted in obtaining a GED order so this young man can obtain his GED, and has taken his mentee to Del Mar College to explore the auto mechanics de-partment (something this youth has expressed as a career option). Joe communicates with his mentee on a weekly basis.
